Volunteering for your friendly neighbourhood Museum is not just a fulfilling way to spend your spare time, it simultaneously is a great opportunity to give back to your local community! Many organisations, including the Museum of Cambridge, cannot function without the support of their volunteers, and they are an integral part in the running of the Museum.
There are a number of reasons to become a Museum volunteer:
- Preserve and promote our shared heritage -As a volunteer you play a vital role in preserving and promoting Cambridgeshire heritage for future generations. By volunteering with us, it is a chance to be part of something bigger than an individual, ensuring our stories and collections are kept alive and accessible to everyone.
- Gain new skills and experience -The Museum offers a number of volunteer roles, including Front of House, Family Events and Tour Guide Volunteers. All of these roles offer an opportunity to develop new skills including customer service, confidence in public speaking, delivering family educational events, and engaging with your wider community.
- Connect with your local community –Volunteering at the Museum is a sure-fire way to meet people from all walks of life and connect with people who share similar interests and passions.

Jenny, Collections Volunteer, says: ‘Volunteering at the Museum of Cambridge is the highlight of my week. I love that I get to help safeguard our history in such a fun and friendly environment. Each object I’m helping to preserve has its own story to tell, and that’s pretty amazing!‘
Annabel, Front of House Volunteer, says: ‘I joined the Museum of Cambridge as a volunteer because I wanted both to learn more about the city where I’ve lived for more than 30 years (and about which I know shamefully little) – and also support a local institution that I think is really important.’
Barbara, Collections and Research Volunteer, says: ‘I like the choice of different volunteer roles at the Museum and really enjoy tapping away on the laptop one afternoon and cleaning artifacts on another along with friendly people.‘
